Grande Prairie Police Service

MUNICIPAL POLICE SERVICE
GRANDE PRAIRIE, ALBERTA

In 2023, GPPS became Canada’s newest municipal police service – an innovative and progressive agency tailor-made to meet the needs of its city.

Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) uses an innovative community policing model that integrates policing, municipal enforcement, and mental health and addiction services into a single team led by the Police Chief. The goal of this new police service is to send the right people and resources to every call, and strike a balance between intervention and enforcement.

THE ASK

In March 2023, Grande Prairie City Council made the decision to transition from RCMP contract policing to a municipal police service built specifically to meet the needs of their growing city. The GPPS Transition Team was familiar with Indalma’s work for Surrey Police Service during its transition process. They needed a branding team with transition experience that could move quickly and, in September, Indalma was invited to Grande Prairie to meet with the team and their newly hired Chief of Police. Our job was to conduct a Discovery and use the findings to help build a brand for the new service that would inspire pride and confidence, starting with their new crest.

THE WORK

During the Discovery, Indalma consulted with a range of stakeholders – from employees, to police commission members, to Indigenous community members – to uncover what they needed to see and hear from the new service, what the challenges and opportunities were, what made GPPS unique, and to learn about the city and local policing issues.

The resulting Discovery report provided a comprehensive overview of the GPPS brand – from its goals, values, key messages, and unique selling points (the features that make it different from other agencies), to its challenges and opportunities.

The findings gave us the information we needed to begin creating key brand assets for the agency, beginning with their brand identity and crest. The new crest embodies Grande Prairie’s youthful character, rich cultural heritage, and natural beauty. It expresses the progressive values that drive GPPS, including their commitment to inclusion and reconciliation.

Once the crest was approved, and elements such as the typography and colour palette were chosen for the brand, Indalma created a Brand Style Guide for the organization.

As GPPS continues to grow and move through the transition process, Indalma will be watching with interest to see how this innovative and results-oriented police service, which envisions policing as just one arm of a holistic approach to public safety, sets a new standard for community policing in Canada.
